Biological method effective in reducing algal blooms

Eutrophic lakes can be restored by reducing their populations of roach and bream. That is a key finding of Mistra EviEM’s systematic review of research on ‘biomanipulation’ – removal or stocking of fish or other species. The results confirm that biological methods can be an important tool in managing aquatic environments. Fish removal to alter the balance of different species has been used in many places as a simple, low-cost way of restoring eutrophic lakes by biological means.
